BOOK DESCRIPTION

“Is it too late to tell him you love him when you are looking down the barrel of his gun?”

An English debutante transforms from Miss-Perfectly-Correct to criminally insane as she breaks the bonds of her rigid upbringing. Sheriff Hank Gephart tries to reel her in – but she’s out of control and she’s not hitting the brakes.

What happened to the genteel lady in twin-set and pearls? And why did she shoot Mr Right?

Brake Failure is set in 1999 in the months leading up to Y2K “meltdown” when the US government was spending $150 billion preparing for Armageddon As Lionel Shriver says in her novel, We Have To Talk About Kevin: “1999, a year widely mooted beforehand as the end of the world.”

HERE ARE MY THOUGHTS AND REVIEW

This story begins with a mystery, the body of Sheriff Hank Gephart lying outside The Shady Acres Retirement Home and bleeding profusely saying ‘Don’t do it Ruby’, of course who Ruby is the secret of the book until you read further. This story darts back and forth from present day which is the turn of the millennium to about 5 months before in the UK and the announcement of the forth coming marriage of Ruby and Edward and subsequent departure in go and live in Paris. Unfortunately Paris ends up changing to Kansas and one very moody Ruby makes it obvious that she will do everything in her power to hate it.

Ruby is very eloquent in her little two piece sets and exquisite nightly cuisine for her, her husband and any business entertaining. In fact she is a proper little madam, not the most likeable character I have ever read about but things kinda hot up and change with Miss Prim and Proper turning into a bit of a wild foxy lady and even being a bit of a celebrity herself locally. There are points to prove with her and her half sister Claire and real thought to be given to whether she wants to live her life just as a shell to score points or actually live.  There are some funny scenes in the story which makes this a really light hearted and enjoyable book, I especially liked when she gets the carrot of Paris dangled again.

The changes in Ruby snowball when romances pops up, and not with her husband whom I just couldn’t like. The more time Ruby and Claire are apart the more she finds who she really is, unfortunately Ruby doesn’t know when to put the brakes on in her life. This is a really entertaining book that made me smile and at times giggle. It isn’t always totally believable but it is a lot of fun to read.
